phpBB3: upgrading not exactly same as with phpBB2

Postby Миша » Thursday, 31 Jul, 2008 13:30

I was just forced to upgrade to phpBB 3.0.2. because the file posting.php was bugging, giving just a blank page as somebody tried to post. Weirdo.

In old phpBB2 fashion I tried just to overwrite old *.php files with new ones. The next surprise came up: DB of phpBB 3.0.0 seemed to be pretty incompatible with the DB of phpBB 3.0.2. Another weirdo, and imho a serious one. Was the DB not well projected from the very beginning? People lose their jobs for that in the real world.

I had to roll back to the old phpBB 3.0.0 and then download upgrade package, first from 3.0.0 to 3.0.1 and then from 3.0.1 to 3.0.2. Again a weirdo, but somewhat more reasonable: phpBB group does not ask for pay and they may allow theirselves to save some time, server space and throughput.

The most annoying thing is that the man for admin is pointing to this location, telling that there should be looked for "Automatic Update Package" archive, which is not there. Yet another thing people get drilled in boss` office for. The actual location of this archive is currently here:

http://www.phpbb.com/downloads/olympus.php
Please see the link below.

The points:
- Upgrade does not work in old fashion way anymore
- Yeah, support suck, but that's why I wrote this post

The new update page is but here:

http://www.phpbb.com/downloads/olympus.php?update=1

After you select your current version, you will get the update package from it to the latest one. Wow. So, you do not have anymore to upgrade them step by step, which is also a good advancement for the phpBB3 team.
